Sleep Pain Free to Improve Recovery

Do you have discomfort while you sleep? Lack of sleep can actually affect healing. Here are a few household items that you can use to sleep more comfortably with aches and pains. It is not a true fix, but getting a good night’s sleep is one important stop on the road to recovery!

Do you sleep on your side and have hip or back pain?

  • Consider using NOT 1, but 2 pillows between your legs.

    • Pillows compress down through the night, so one pillow when you first go to sleep may feel good, but as the hours go on, it will compress down and not be as supportive. Try two pillows in an extra-large pillowcase to keep them together.

Do you feel like your back is over active or “stiff” when you lie down on your back?

  • Use 2-3 pillows under your knees.

    • Again, 1 just isn’t enough. Pillows under the knees will help your back release down toward the bed. This will help the muscles around your back to finally relax after some overuse throughout the day.

Are you constantly paying big bucks for that perfect pillow that prevents neck pain?

  • Before you try the next miracle pillow, go to your bathroom closet and grab a hand towel!

    • The goal of a pillow is to support your neck with your head relaxed over your shoulders. Many pillows push your head forward and provide little support for the neck. So a rolled up towel roll where your head can be on the bed (in-line with the shoulders), and your neck supported is ideal. Try this free option before adding to the mountain of failed pillows you’re collecting in your guest bedroom.

Do you have shoulder pain with sleeping?

  • Tuck a pillow under your shoulder and between your arm and body. Make sure you get it up into your armpit. The pillow should support down past your elbow.

    • A shoulder that has pain with sleeping, usually is lacking support, so muscles can’t rest. Using a pillow can provide the extra support needed for muscles to “let go.”

Give these quick fixes a try to improve your sleep and get you moving toward your goals.
